Scripture for Healing and Restoration
Healing is the heartbeat of a restorative God. These verses speak to healing of body, mind, and spirit, and invite you to trust the One who promises to bind up the broken and make whole.
The short answer
The Bible affirms that God heals (Psalm 147:3, James 5:14-15) without promising that every illness is healed on request. Paul left Trophimus sick and kept his own thorn. Scripture holds both: pray boldly for healing, and trust the God who sometimes gives sustaining grace instead.

“For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.”
“He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”
“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”
“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”
What Can You Do About It?
God reveals His heart for restoration throughout Scripture. He sends His word and heals; He promises to restore health. Even when healing does not come in the form or timing we hope for, His character as healer does not change. We can trust His goodness in what He withholds as much as in what He gives.
Faith and medicine are not opponents. Scripture calls us to prayer and to the practical wisdom of care — calling on elders, seeking help, stewarding the body God gave us. Healing often flows through the means God Himself provides, and seeking them is an act of faith, not a lack of it.
Inner healing and renewal matter as much as the body. God restores the soul, brings peace to the mind, and renews strength. Whether you wait on physical healing or recovery from a wound no one can see, He is near, and His work in you is real and ongoing.
Common Questions
Does God always heal if you have enough faith?
No, and Scripture is unusually direct about it. Paul asked three times and was told 'my grace is sufficient for thee' (2 Corinthians 12:9). He left Trophimus sick at Miletum and told Timothy to take wine for a stomach ailment. Teaching that unhealed people simply lacked faith adds guilt to suffering and does not come from the text.
Should I still see a doctor if I'm praying for healing?
Yes. Luke was a physician, and Scripture never sets medicine against prayer. James 5:14 pairs prayer with anointing oil, which was itself a common remedy of the time. Using every means available is part of trusting God, not a hedge against Him.
What does 'by his stripes we are healed' mean in Isaiah 53:5?
1 Peter 2:24 quotes this verse and applies it explicitly to healing from sin — 'that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness.' Many readers also see physical healing anticipated in it, ultimately fulfilled in the resurrection. What it does not offer is a guarantee of bodily healing on demand in this life.
How do I pray for healing when I've prayed for years already?
Luke 18:1-8 tells a whole parable about persistence in prayer without shame. Long prayer is not evidence of unanswered faith. It is also fair to change what you ask for — for strength, for the people caring for you, for the day in front of you — while still asking for healing.
